Tensions escalated at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) as members of the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) staged a protest on campus, expressing strong discontent over the closure of the case related to missing student Najeeb Ahmed. As part of the demonstration, students symbolically burned an effigy of the Delhi Police, accusing the authorities of inaction and negligence in the investigation.
The protest, held near the administrative block of JNU, was marked by slogans demanding justice for Najeeb and accountability from the investigative agencies. JNUSU leaders criticized the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Delhi Police for what they termed a “complete failure” in locating Najeeb or bringing any clarity to his mysterious disappearance.
Najeeb Ahmed, a first-year MSc student, went missing from his hostel on October 15, 2016, following an alleged altercation with members of a student organization. Despite years of investigation and public outcry, no substantial progress has been made, leading to widespread criticism of law enforcement agencies.
Speaking at the protest, JNUSU representatives stated, “The closure of Najeeb’s case is a grave injustice, not just to him and his family, but to every student who believes in the right to safety and justice on campus. We will not let this issue be buried.”
The effigy burning, a symbolic act of protest, drew attention from the larger academic and activist community, many of whom have long demanded transparency and accountability in the case. Students vowed to continue their agitation until the case is reopened and investigated with renewed seriousness.
JNUSU has also called for solidarity from student bodies across the country and announced plans for a larger march in the coming days.
