The only one arrested Tafazul Islam in the Assam gangrape case has reportedly died in the police custody after he jumped to the pond handcuffed when the police officials took him to the crime scene in at around 3:30 a.m. for recreation of the crime. He was the only arrested among the three accused in the crime; Tafazul tried to escape from the police when taken for recreation. "The accused escaped from police custody and jumped into the pond. A search operation was launched immediately and his body was recovered after nearly two hours," police said.

The 14 year old girl was gang raped in Assam’s Nagaon district after she was returning from her tuition by her bicycle at around 8pm on Thursday when they caught her. She was found injured and unconscious on the roadside near a pond when local people found her informed police. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma stated yesterday "When there is any atrocity against women, we need to take prompt action."
